John Allan papers, 1777-1784.

Collection consists of a proclamation issued by Col. John Allan while commanding officer at Machias, Massachusetts Bay (now Maine), 23 June 1779, encouraging men to enlist with the Continental Army. The proclamation outlines British persecutions and details Indian participation. Collection also includes photostats and transcripts of letters written by Allan to the Continental Congress, 1777-85, related to Indian affairs in the Eastern District. The photostats and transcripts were compiled for research by Robert E. Moody in 1933.
